How and when to plant beans in our garden

plant beans

Knowing how and when to plant beans in our garden is essential to be successful in cultivation. In the northern hemisphere, specifically in Spain, the planting of broad beans is highly dependent on winter temperatures. When winters are mild, beans can be sown in early or mid-fall, but when they are more rigorous, it will be necessary to wait in early spring.

How and when to plant beans

If the winter is not too hard, you can plant beans in the fall and harvest them in the spring, but, as I mentioned before, if there are many touches of frost in the winter, it would be best to wait for the spring to begin in order to collect them in late this season or early summer.

Beans should be planted directly in the planter or in the vegetable garden. The planter should be 5 liters and 20 cm deep. To plant beans, you will need to soak the seeds in water for 24 hours to soften them. Then, make grooves in the garden of about 8 cm and place the seeds.

The bean plant can grow in any type of soil if you apply compost to it, but it prefers clayey ones. If the soil is too acidic, you can add a little lime. On the other hand, wood ash mixed with the earth is an excellent idea for growing beans, since it contains a good amount of potassium. For every 2 meters of a row of the plantation, the ideal is to add 100 g of ash.

Between row and row, it leaves a separation of 15 cm and a distance between planting lines of 60 cm. If you are going to place the bean seeds in the pot, prepare a compost mix of soil and plant each seed 6 cm deep.

Sun, irrigation, and harvesting

Fava beans need the sun to grow, but not excessively, so they prefer to have a little shade during the day. Also, it does not tolerate excessive heat and its ideal temperature ranges between 20 ° C. As for irrigation, it is enough to only water two or three times a week. On the other hand, when the tip of the plant reaches the desired size, you must cut it to consume it. The bean pod can be consumed, but it is important that you remove the beans or their seeds. If you are going to let the pods dry, you can remove the dried beans and save them for winter consumption.

Parasitic causes

One of the most common parasitic causes of bean crops is aphids, which you must fight immediately. In the event that aphids or black flies are at the apex of the plant, you must cut it and that’s it.

On the other hand, downy mildew can also be present. This is a fungus related to excess moisture and irrigation. To prevent it from appearing, you should only water when the soil begins to dry. In this way, you will avoid puddles. Another tip is to water the substrate directly and not to make the mistake of watering from above, completely covering the plant.
