Grow Cape Daisy

The Cape Daisy is a precious plant that has its origin in Africa and that grows in a climate very similar to that of Spain, especially in the part of the Peninsula. It is very resistant and has the great advantage that it perfectly withstands the more salinity that can be found in places near the sea, so if you live in such an area it will be a great choice.

It is also known by the name of Matacabras, and its scientific name is Dimorphoteca Ecklonis. It belongs to the Asteraceae family and its first flowering period comes during spring and early summer, more or less until July. When the month of September arrives it will have a second flowering, and if you have previously cut the dried flowers you will get the new ones to come out even more and more beautiful. Keep reading this article if you want to know everything about growing Cape Margarita.

To grow this plant, it is important that you take into account the following:

  • Location : Ideally, you should grow it in outdoor spaces where it can enjoy a warm climate, but if you don’t have a garden or terrace you can grow it in a window, as long as you can meet the other conditions for its proper development.
  • Temperature : its perfect average temperature is 25ºC throughout the year, being able to survive up to 10 degrees below this amount but occasionally needing some heat so that it can develop well.
  • Irrigation : it must be moderate and vary depending on the time of year. When it is very hot you will have to water more so that it always has some humidity, but it cannot get waterlogged.
  • Fertilize : do it only once a year, during the spring, and always with a fertilizer that is specific for these types of plants.
  • Soil : it does not have any special requirements in this sense since it adapts to everyone, but it is true that for the winter to pass better you should cover the ground with straw or pine bark so that it is protected from frost. The substrate must be light.
  • Planting : when you go to plant it, you should take into account the space it will occupy when it grows in order to make it available. If you are going to plant several, it is important that you leave the space that each one will need when it begins to grow.
