Main care of the velvet plant

This is a practical summary of the cultivation and care of the nettle or velvet plant that you must know to have one at home:

  • Temperature: it needs to be at a temperature between 15 and 25ºC throughout the year, and it does not tolerate very cold temperatures at all. You can pass it inside the home during the winter so that it does not spoil.
  • Lighting: it should be in a very bright area, so avoid the shade, at least for a good part of the day. If you are indoors, choose the window with the most sun during the day.
  • Soil: use a normal potting substrate, which can be found at any store that sells plants.
  • Transplantation: the ideal is to do it every 3-4 years, always during spring or summer.
  • Irrigation: it has to be abundant, but be careful not to flood, especially in the hottest season. During the winter you have to water less since it will not consume as much water.
  • Fertilizer: apply a mineral fertilizer every 15 days during the summer.
  • Pests and diseases: if the plant does not receive enough light, it is very easy for it to be attacked by aphids.
  • Multiplication: the best option is to do it by cuttings when the end of summer arrives since it is a plant that roots very quickly.
