4 common plant pests

One writes and writes about plants and pests are repeated over and over again. This happens because many species are threatened by a variety of bugs and insects that find their source of life in plants.

For all this, today we dedicate ourselves to the most frequent pests of plants , to take them into account when we discover the first symptoms of an attack.

Although plants suffer from a large number of pests and diseases, some are very popular and that is why we dedicate ourselves to discovering them and thus controlling them or preventing them from appearing.

Aphid and cabbage maggot

cabbage worm

If you have ever researched this topic, you have probably heard the word Aphidius . It is a pest made up of several species that have two features in common: a pear-shaped body and very long antennae. This pest damages plants by absorbing salvia, weakening them. On the other hand, the vaia begins to fall through the leaves and generates a humid atmosphere, which gives rise to the appearance of mold.

If you have fruit plants or vegetables, the presence of Aphids is common . To attack them there are several methods, from spraying with repellent products to the application of horticultural oil or hot pepper.

As its name indicates, the cabbage worm attacks this vegetable. It is a very frequent plague and that is why you have to be vigilant. The worms affect the roots of the plants and the best way to prevent their attack is to place wood ashes, parasitic nematodes around the roots or to cover the crops.

caterpillars and snails

Snails

Caterpillars are also among the most common pests of plants. The caterpillars are born from the butterfly or the moth that lay their eggs on the plant and after a few days they come to light. They attack plants because the vast majority are polyphagous , that is, they feed on plants . It is common for them to attack vegetables such as spinach, parsley, rue, potatoes, tomatoes and lettuce, among others, although some caterpillars can attack an entire family (for example, the Solanaceae family, of which they are part peppers, tomatoes, aubergines and potatoes). The symptoms that are noticed are small holes in the leaves of the plants. When checking it, it is common to find them in the area of the stems and in the lower part of the leaves.

Something similar happens with snails , which, although they seem to live in harmony, actually feed on plants and thus leave traces of their passage through a series of small holes in the leaves. To avoid their attack, you can resort to a simple trick: place an egg shell on the plant, since snails do not like to walk on irregular and pointed surfaces.
