Seedlings in winter

In these days when the cold is deep in many cities and towns in Spain, it is difficult to think of growing new plants and vegetables. But if you want to try it despite everything , it is best to plant in seedbeds so that the seeds and seedlings have a warm and pleasant habitat in which to develop.

On winter days, a receptacle in which to place the soil is not enough, but it is also necessary to create the perfect environment for the seeds to grow, to heat the seedbeds in some way so that they have the temperature that the seeds need for their development.

There are two alternatives in these cases: protected nurseries or heated bed nurseries.

Protected seedbeds

It is the simplest option for growing new plants because it involves covering the seedbeds with some protection to isolate them from the cold and frost . In general, they are covered with plastic, although many use crystals.

Care must be taken to cover the entire seedbed very well but also to allow the plants to receive natural light on sunny days. Those days will have to remove the protection.

This method is more complex but very natural and therein lies its advantage. In the case of hot bed nurseries, it is possible to create a warm climate from the manure.

The seedbed will have to be filled with manure and then with a layer of compost . After watering, it is time to sow the seeds that will develop in a warm habitat thanks to the heat generated by the manure. Finally, it will be necessary to protect the seedbed with a plastic or glass.
