The aroma of verbena is rich and soft, which is why it is widely used in the cosmetic industry . Verbena is a very common herbaceous plant that you can grow in your urban garden because it is not demanding.

More about vervain

This aromatic plant is woody and its leaves remain standing throughout the year, although there are annual varieties, as we must bear in mind that there are about 250 different species.

When growing it, you should know that it is a creeping plant so you have to have a somewhat generous surface and be careful to grow the plant with some space between specimens since it spreads over the ground.

The verbena also prefers sandy, light and well-drained soils . It is not a demanding plant as it is resistant to dry conditions, so weekly watering will suffice to keep it in good condition. On the contrary, it is best not to water it too much.

In terms of brightness, the verbena grows better if it is exposed to the sun , although, as we said, it is a fairly adaptable plant, so it can tolerate semi-shade conditions. It is a plant with a warm to temperate climate, so it does not support frost .

At the time of sowing, it is best to fertilize the land first to make it richer in nutrients. You can divide young shoots or plant cuttings, always in a horizontal position. The best time to sow the seeds is autumn and spring and it is recommended to do it in a nursery.

Pests and harvesting

The verbena plant is very resistant to pests and diseases , so it will not present major problems. The main enemies that affect it are aphids , a very frequent pest in all types of plants, and the red spider mite .

Verbena can be harvested in the middle of summer, a month after flowering. Then you will have to let it dry if you want to take advantage of its aroma.
