The Brazilian trunk, also called water stick (although it is not aquatic) is one of the favorite plants to have inside a house, since it is tall, does not take up much space and, in addition, always has leaves. But, although it is easy to care for, there are others that are very similar to it and that are also very interesting. Do you want to know what they are?

Well, if you answered yes, make yourself comfortable because we are going to teach you plants similar to the trunk of Brazil which are very, very pretty.

Lucky bamboo (Dracaena braunii)

Image – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

El lucky bamboo -which is not actually a bamboo, but a drácena- is a plant similar to the trunk of Brazil that reaches 2 meters in height. The stem is thin, about 2 centimeters thick, and green leaves sprout from it.up to 30 centimeters long.

It is a very delicate species, which requires a lot of but not direct light, high ambient humidity, and a warm climate throughout the year.

Chamaedorea metallica

The Chamaedorea metallica It is a small palm tree, which reaches a maximum height of 3 meters. The leaves are bifid, metallic green. -hence its name-, so it is a very beautiful plant, perfect to have in a room with light.

It is not as delicate as the Brazilian trunk, in the sense that it better withstands the cool (not the cold), and it does not require as much light. But be careful, because this does not mean that you can be in a dark place, since it is not.

Cordyline (Cordyline fruticosa)

El cordylin or doll plant is an evergreen shrub that can reach 4 meters in height, although in a pot it stays at about 2 meters. It grows slowly, and what’s more, it does so only during the warmest months of the year, since the cold forces it to go into a kind of rest because it can’t stand it. This can be seen even indoors: unless it is kept in a room with high temperatures, between 18 and 30ºC, during the winter it will not shed a single leaf.

This foliage is very similar to that of the trunk of Brazil: it reaches 80 centimeters long by 10 centimeters wide, and they are green.. Other cultivars have been obtained from this species, such as the ‘Rubra’ with reddish leaves. Put it in a room with lots of light so it can keep its colors.

Dracaena marginata (Dracaena reflexa var angustifolia)

La dracaena marginata It is a relative of the Brazilian trunk, in fact both are classified within the same genus (Dracaena), since they are genetically similar. But the leaves are very different: this one has them much thinner, to the point that they can be either linear or lance-shaped. In addition, depending on the variety, they are green, or bicolor (green with lilac margins).

Likewise, we are talking about a species that grows slowly, so we will only have to change the pot very occasionally, that is, every 3 or 4 years and only if the roots come out through the holes in the pot and/or if the land looks worn. Another interesting thing about this dracaena is that it can be in a room where there is little light, but we recommend putting it in one where there is enough so that it grows better.

elephant foot (Beaucarnea recurvata)

Plant elephant foot It is a very slow-growing evergreen shrub that usually reaches 4 meters in height.. It has a very curious trunk, since from a very young age it widens quite a bit, to the point that one of the common names it receives is pot-bellied palm, despite the fact that it has nothing to do with palm trees.

Its leaves are green, leathery and ribbon-like.. These grow arching downwards, making the plant look lovely. Of course, you have to place it in an area where there is a lot of light -natural-, and you should also water it little.

Cassava elephant foot (yucca elephantipes)

La elephant foot yucca It is a plant similar to the trunk of Brazil, but much more resistant to drought and more demanding of light. It is an evergreen shrub that, in its natural habitat, can reach 10 meters, but at home and in a pot it stays at about 2 meters at most because it can’t grow anymore. Its leaves are green, elongated and approximately twenty centimeters long when grown indoors (outside and on the ground they would reach a meter).

It is a beautiful plant that needs to be in a room with lots and lots of light. It is important that this is taken into account, because otherwise it will not grow well.
