Types of indoor palm trees and their names

When we talk about indoor palm trees we refer to a series of palm plants that, either due to their characteristics and / or because of their sensitivity to cold, can be grown indoors. As there are many types of climates and many species, indoor palms are not the same in every country in the world. For this reason, we have made a selection of those found in temperate regions:

Areca (Deeply shining)

The Deeply shining It is a species known as bamboo palm, golden fruit palm or areca, although this last name can lead us to confusion, since there is a whole genus of palm trees that is called that. It is a plant native to Madagascar that has many trunks, that is, it is multicaule, which is also sold in pots with many individual seedlings that have grown together, so it should not be surprising that with the passage of time some of them dry out due to high competition that is created between them.

Reaches a height of 5-7 metersand their trunks thicken about five centimeters at most; indoors and in a pot it is difficult for it to measure more than 2 meters. Its leaves are pinnate, about 2 meters long. It needs a lot of light, but not direct light, as well as high humidity. It supports the cold, and weak frosts of up to -2ºC.

Comrade (Chamaedorea elegans)

The Chamaedorea elegansknown as the hall palm, camaedorea or pacaya, is a palm native to Mexico. Develops a single cane-like trunk that reaches 2 meters in height for about 2-3 centimeters thick, although it is sold in pots with multiple seedlings. The leaves are pinnate, and measure a maximum of 1 meter in length.

It must be kept in a room with light, and away from drafts. Give it about two irrigations a week and spray it with water daily in summer if the humidity of the environment is low. Supports up to -2ºC.

It is a very delicate palm that needs a lot of light, a lot of humidity and also high temperatures (above 15ºC) all year round. Indoors it is used more as a seasonal plant, which is a shame because it can live for 80 years or more.

Although most palm trees reach heights of 10 meters or more, there are others that stay smaller. Some we have already named, such as Chamaedorea elegans, Chamaerops humilis, roebellini phoenix or the high vinesbut there are others that could also be grown in pots and / or small gardens:
