Autumn plants to decorate your home or garden

Tree in autumn

Autumn is one of the favorite seasons of the year: many plants dye their leaves yellowish, orange or reddish, at the same rate as the last flowers of the season open to take advantage of the last days of heat before the pollinating insects hibernate. With the progressive decrease in temperatures, the cold gradually sets in in every corner of the home. It could be a sad moment, not in vain, depending on where we live the first frosts can occur, but the reality is that it does not have to be, and less with these autumn plants that we recommend below.

Japanese maple

Palm Maple ‘Ornate’

El japanese maple, one of the most cultivated shrubs / small trees, precisely because of how beautiful they grow in autumn. With a height of between 5 and 10 meters, depending on the variety and / or cultivar, they are perfect plants to have in the gardens. Of course, to grow well they need the soil to be acidic (pH between 4 and 6), be planted in an area protected from direct sun, and that in winter temperatures drop below 0º (they resist up to -15ºC).

Palms

Archontophoenix maxima

If you have any other Palm tree, or if you do a collection, with the passage of time you will realize one thing: during the summer, they grow that it is a pleasure to see them, reaching 2-3 leaves, if not more, throughout the summer season; but with the arrival of autumn and those autumn rains, it is as if they felt even more comfortableespecially those that live in more temperate climates, such as caryota, Archontophoenix o Rhopalostylis. For this reason we wanted to include them in this list, because although we normally associate these plants with heat, at the end of it there are many species that get even more beautiful if possible.

Berberis thunbergii

It is a deciduous shrub originally from Japan and West Asia that reaches a height of about 2 meters. Its leaves are very small, 12-24mm long and 3-15mm wide. There are different cultivars selected for the foliar color (some are yellow, dark red, purple and even variegated), and the type of growth (in height, compacted). During autumn it is a marvel, because its berries, which are reddish in color, together with the change in color of the leaves, make it a shrub with a very high ornamental value.

Chrysanthemums

Yellow japanese chrysanthemums

The chrysanthemums They are flowers native to Asia that appear as soon as summer is over. They grow to a height of about 30cm, being able to have both in pot and directly planted in the ground. In addition, although they prefer to be outside, they are plants that are well adapted to living inside the house, so that we can even make compositions, with specimens of different colors. The most common are yellow, orange or pink, but we will also find white and red chrysanthemums.

Dahlias

However, if you live in an area with temperatures between a maximum of 38ºC and -2ºC, I can tell you that it is a viable plant, but in a pot, planted in akadama alone or mixed with 30% kiryuzuna. During the autumn it becomes beautiful, when its leaves change to yellowish tones or intense purple depending on the variety.
