Calocedro is one of the most beautiful conifers that exist. And one of the most impressive, too, Over time, it acquires a more or less pyramidal shape whose end is more than 60 meters from the ground, which is more than enough reason to have it in a large garden if you are passionate of conifers or giant plants.

Origin and characteristics of Calocedro

Our protagonist is an evergreen tree native to North America that reaches heights between 40 and 69 meters. Its upright trunk can measure up to 4,5m in diameter. Its crown is highly branched, composed of evergreen leaves that are renewed after several years.

The plant is monoecious, which means it has separate female flowers and separate male flowers. The fruit is a brown cone inside which we will find about 4 winged seeds.

How do you take care of yourself?

If you want to get a copy, we recommend providing the following care:

  • Location: outdoors, in full sun or in semi-shade.
  • Irrigation: two to three times a week in summer, and every 5-6 days the rest of the year.
  • Land: it needs to be fertile, well drained and slightly acidic.
  • Subscriber: from the beginning of spring to the end of summer, it must be paid with organic fertilizers such as guano or manure from herbivorous animals.
  • Multiplication: by seeds, which have to be stratified in the refrigerator at 4ºC in winter before sowing them in pots three months later.
  • Plagues and diseases: it is one of the most resistant conifers. It does not usually have problems.
  • Rusticity: withstands cold and frosts down to -18ºC.
