It is a deciduous plant native to the eastern United States and southeastern Canada, where it grows near freshwater swamps and rivers. It reaches a height of up to 40 meters, with a thick trunk up to 1 meter in diameter.

Its leaves are palmate, 8-16cm long by 6-12cm wide, composed of five lobes. The upper surface is bright green and the underside is silver. The flowers appear distributed in panicles that sprout before the leaves, in early spring. The seeds are winged samaras measuring 5 to 10mm in diameter.
