How to plant seeds in a pot

Sowing seeds in a pot

With spring and good weather, it is time to remove the seeds from the fruits or from the envelopes so that they begin to awaken and thus become beautiful plants. The truth is that sowing is always a pleasure, but if we bury them more than necessary, we will wait in vain for them to germinate, since in order to do so they need to be able to “feel” the sunlight.

But not only that: if we water them excessively, they will most likely end up rotting, so how can we avoid it? Let us know how to plant seeds in a pot abroad and be 100% successful (or almost).

Treat the seeds with copper sulfate

The greatest enemy of seeds and seedlings is the fungus. This microorganism acts very fast, so much so that when it becomes visible to us it is too late. Thus, it is very important to treat the seeds with copper sulfate before sowing and again every 20-25 days after sowing.

We will place them on a tray, cover them with a little copper sulfate, and spray them well with water. Another option is to put them in a glass of water to which we will have added a pinch of sulfate for 24 hours.

Choose a substrate that has good drainage

Vermiculite, ideal substrate for seedbeds

Drainage is essential to prevent the roots from suffocating. For the seedbeds, the use of vermiculite is highly recommended (see top image). Not only will it allow excess water to drain out without any problem, but it will also it will keep the seeds at a much more comfortable temperature for them by absorbing heat.

As if that were not enough, it is very easy to find for sale in nurseries, garden stores and agricultural stores. So once we have it we just have to fill the pot with it almost completely.

Don’t bury the seed too much

The seeds to be able to germinate do not have to be deeply buried. For example, if they are small and 0,5cm wide, we never have to cover them with a layer of substrate more than 1cm thickOtherwise they will have many problems to germinate, and even more to have a good development.

Likewise, it is convenient that they are not too close together. The ideal is to sow a maximum of two or three seeds in each pot, so that they can have space and grow well.

Water regularly

Watering can

For germination to occur we have to water from time to time, preventing the substrate from drying out. As usual, It will be watered 3 or 4 times a week with rainwater or without limeEither with a small watering can or, even better, with a sprayer.

Good planting .
