How are lavender plants cared for?

Washing her in flower

I did not want to finish the article without first explaining how these precious plants are cared for. Thus, in addition to knowing the main species, you will also know what do they need so they look beautiful for years and years.

As I said at the beginning, they are plants prepared to withstand droughtperhaps the least resistant is the lavandula lanatabut the rest can be perfectly in a garden where the rains fall very infrequently. I can tell you that I have 2 L. angustifoliaand although during the first year they needed regular waterings, today they take care of themselves. In my area, to give you an idea, about 350 liters of water fall a year, between spring and, above all, autumn.

The keys to having healthy lavenders are the following: too much sun (if possible throughout the day), and more or less regular waterings (2 times a week) whether it is in soil or in a pot.

As for the land, they are not demanding at all. They can grow in all types of terraineven in those calcareous that have a great tendency to compact and / or erode. However, it is worth helping them a little by mixing the soil that you have taken from the planting hole, with 20% perlite or another similar material. This way you will get your root system to adapt much faster. On the other hand, if they are potted, it is advisable to use substrates composed of peat and perlite.

It is not necessary to pay thembut if you want you can do it from spring to late summer with any universal fertilizer or, if you prefer, adding a handful of organic fertilizer such as horse manure or ground horn.
