Pogonatherum paniceum

Normally, when we think of a bamboo, very tall canes, ten meters or more, which grow very fast, immediately come to mind. But, what if I told you that there is a very similar plant but that it always stays small, and that it can also be grown indoors? No, this is not a joke. Its scientific name is Pogonatherum paniceumalthough it is much better known by its other names: dwarf banbu or indoor bamboo.

Its leaves are very reminiscent of those of the fastest plants in the world, but in reality, it is a different type. Let’s get to know it.

Pogonatherum

Dwarf bamboo is an evergreen grass with linear leaves up to 8cm in length. It grows to a maximum height of 50cmso it is ideal to have in a pot throughout its life, decorating for example the living room.

If we talk about the cultivation, it is not a demanding plant. The only thing that should be taken into account is that, whether you have it indoors or outdoors, it must receive a lot of natural light. If you live in a frosty climate, it will be necessary to protect it from the cold, as it could suffer significant damage.

Indoor bamboo

Once every two years it is necessary to change the pot, in spring, planting it in one that is about 3-4cm wider than the previous one, using a universal plant substrate mixed with 20% perlite. After transplanting, and once every 4-5 days, the plant must be wateredthus preventing the substrate from drying out. Nor can we forget about the fertilizer, which is recommended to do from spring to late summer with a mineral or organic fertilizer, such as guano, following the instructions specified on the package.

Indoor bamboo is resistant to pests and diseases, and you don’t need that we can. What can be done is divide the bushso we will get new copies.
