Cold resistant plants | Gardening On

Ornamental cabbage

The warmest season of the year is already a memory in our hearts. By now, bathing suits and sandals are very well stored and coats are beginning to pile up on the chair or on the coat rack.

It is also a difficult stage for plants, which must cope with intense winter days and adapt as well as possible to low temperatures. Some plants do it better than others and that is why today I will recommend some plant species that adapt to cold without suffering too much.

Cold plants

Cotoneaster

There are always plants that can tolerate low temperatures better than others. Although you can protect the plants from the cold, some species are stronger and more resistant so you will not need to take care of them too much so that they survive and give beauty even in winter.

There are many cold hardy shrubs and one to highlight is the Cotoneastera species that is ideal for places with low temperatures because, in addition to supporting cold days, it is resistant to frost. It is a very adaptable species considering that it is native to the Himalayas. It is a shrub that will give you beauty and color due to its green berries and that can reach a generous height of up to 5 meters. At least that’s what happens if it grows wild.

Another very interesting species to have in the garden in winter is the ornamental cabbagea variety of cabbage very visual which stands out for its purplish colored leaves. This plant is resistant to cold and can develop both outdoors and indoors. Unlike the vast majority of plants, winter suits you perfectly as it is when your colors become more vibrant.

Plants with flowers

Alpine Violet

The Alpine Violet It is also a great option if you are looking for plants for the winter. It is a showy plant with generous and abundant flowers that remain standing throughout the cold season, even into late spring. This bulbous plant rests for the summer to be reborn the following fall.

I have also tried having a Erika and it has given me great results. This plant is simple and cheap. You can compare it in any nursery and choose between the version with white flowers or the one with small purple flowers. It is a plant with a romantic style and very green leaves that survives all year round. In summer, protect it from the intense sun, especially if it is exposed for long hours. In the winter, the ideal is to place it in a more sheltered place outside to avoid strong winds.
