Planting the garden design | Gardening On

the garden

Hello everybody! How are you doing in your garden design? This week I wanted to finalize the last details that the weather has allowed me, but unfortunately it is not advisable to continue until spring, because we are on the verge of winter and this season nothing should be planted on the ground. Now we are going to get fully into the topic of plantsSince it is a small and low-maintenance garden, it is not necessary to put a professional irrigation system since the hose is more than enough.

Before I close this guide momentarily, I’m going to give you homework for spring. And meanwhile, Would you like to see the evolution of the garden?

Access area

Access

For the garden access area, as I commented last week, it is advisable to use shrubs or low plantsno more than two meters high. Oleanders, Cycas, and Hibiscus are ideal for this, but you can also use many more: viburnum, laurel, short conifers, rose bushes, Berberis,… there are plenty to choose from!

Area attached to the work

Wall area

For this area what is sought is to cover the wall. When you have that goal, climbing plants with tendrilsas for example the virgin vine or the passiflora, fulfill this function very quickly. In a short time they are able to cover a good piece of wall. In addition, as they have a very thin trunk, they can be planted in pots, in the ground … or on recycled tires.

Neighborhood

This is another view of this area. I wanted to make a brief mention of wild herbs. There is a tendency to think that a garden with wild herbs everywhere gives the impression that it is an abandoned garden. Keep in mind that the presence of this type of herb favors more biodiversity in the gardenand that means that there are more types of pollinating insects, and more variety of insects that fight pests naturally. The grasses can be used as grass, and the remains that can be left after “hoeing” if they are left in the ground when they rot, they release nutrients that can take advantage of the plants … or the soil.

Area attached to the garage

Garage

This area is intended to be a bit of a »relaxation area». Hence there are only the trees of Brachychiton populneus, Prunus pissardii v. cerasiferaand the Schefflera arboricolamore or less at a distance of 2-3 meters from each other. All the other plants that there will be are shrubs of medium to low height, and Queen Strelitzialavenders, Spireas, and so on.

If you have dogs or want to protect plants in some way, it is highly recommended to use a grid and even, in the case of trees, stones or blocks if they are within reach. Another way is to use natural repellants, like the plant Plectranthus canninus or spray lemon water around the plants to be protected.

With that said, homework for spring is:

  • With the eraser you made at the beginning, start look for the plants you would like to put in every corner of your garden. If you can, do not hesitate to take a look at the plants that the gardens in your area have. Without a doubt it will be these species that will grow best in your garden.
  • Look for plants that can live without problems in your garden in nurseries and garden centers, taking into account the type of soil and climate you have. This will save you a lot of money (and water) in maintenance. Remember also that in this same blog you will find many articles that can help you choose plants, advice on garden design, … and much more.
  • It is advisable, before planting, Composting the soil with an organic compost such as worm castings or horse manureespecially if it is clayey or calcareous. Although it is not essential to do so, the compost will help future plants to acclimatize and adapt better to their final place.

This is it… for now. See you soon!
