Desert garden

If you have little time, you can think about having a desert garden with native flowers that do not require great care. It is a great alternative for those who do not feel like watering daily.

The secret of the desert gardens they are the plants that coexist there, which are typical of dry and hot climates and therefore do not require considerable watering. Unlike traditional gardens, there the plants are typical of desert climates and many of them accumulate water to withstand long periods of drought. These gardens are a possible alternative but only if you live in a place with a moderate climate as the plants do not resist cold temperatures.

If that’s your case you can start design it. The first thing is to choose an area of the garden that receives more than six hours of sun daily. Then it will be necessary to have a sandy soil with very good drainage. With a gardening shovel you have to remove the earth with sand, adding sand if necessary and then scattering it with a rake. A great way to see if the soil is sandy is to take a handful of soil and form a ball: if it is armed it is loamy sand, if it does not form it is sandy soil.

Then plant big cactus in the back of the garden wearing leather gloves to avoid punctures. Add desert flowers and cutting sage around them, as this specimen reaches great height and has two-tone flowers. Then you can include wildflowers like Mexican golden poppy and lily of the desert to add color to the garden. Finally, you can place stones around the perimeter of the garden and then add agave soicta plants and have them grow behind the rocks.

Finally, place gravel between plants and water with the hose. Then you will have to renew the irrigation once a week if it does not rain.
