What are the lawn care?

Grass

The lawn is a beautiful green carpet composed of herbs that, in addition to growing very quickly, have the peculiarity that they support footprints well. However, it is also one of the areas of the garden that needs the most care. For this reason, it is important that, before we start sowing it, we find out if we have enough time to have it in good condition.

To make it easier for us, we will explain below what are the lawn care.

Harvest

Lawn mowers

Passing the mower is one of the most important tasks to complete in order to have a beautiful lawn. Thanks to it, we will get the herbs that form it to occupy the ground more quickly.

How often do you have to mow the lawn? It will depend a lot on the climate, the soil, the species that we have sown, the frequency of irrigation, among others. But you have to know that in general during the summer it will be necessary to do it once a week, while the rest of the year with once every 15 or even every 30 days if it’s cold it will be enough.

At what height? Again it depends . But to get more or less an idea, you should not cut more than a third of the length of the blade at one time. Of course, during and after winter you have to cut less, since this will help you recover.

Here are our buying guides if you do not know what lawnmower to buy:

Irrigation

Lawn watering

Irrigation is another of the most necessary tasks. But it is common to make the mistake of overwatering, something that is completely normal if we take into account that the vast majority of types of lawns require a lot of water. However, the frequency will depend a lot on the type of grass, the climate and the soil.

To avoid problems, read the instructions that will be inscribed on the box or bag of seeds, and above all, avoid watering during the central hours of the day to protect the leaves from sunburn and disease.

Airy

Lawn aerator shoe

As time passes, the soil compacts which prevents the roots from continuing to grow normally. This problem is especially serious in clay soils, since in addition the water will have serious difficulties to reach the root system of the lawn.

To avoid this, what is done is aerate the lawnfor example with aerating shoes (like these here!) or with a wheeled aerator (you can buy it here!).

topdressing

This task consists of apply a small layer of sand, mulch, or a mixture of both on the lawn. After aerating it is highly advisable to do so to fill in those micro-holes that remain, which will allow the roots to spread. Thus, the quality of the green carpet is improved.

Scarified

Lawn rake

A layer of plant debris, moss and soil can accumulate on the lawn that, if not removed, can cause the appearance of fungi and other pests. So, with a rake or with a scarifier it must be removed once a year.

Reseed

Grass

Sometimes bald spots can appear on the lawn where it will be necessary to reseed. Before doing it, you have to apply mulch and remove the ground lightly with a hoe in spring or fall.

Mulch

Mulch

So that you can have optimal development, we have to remember to pay it from spring to autumn with mulch, or with a specific fertilizer for grass (you can buy it here!) following the indications specified on the product packaging.

Weeding

Grasses on the lawn

Weeding consists of removing herbs that do not interest us. On a lawn it is normal for them to sprout from time to time, especially in spring. But with removing them manually or applying a broadleaf herbicide we will be able to keep them at bay.

In the event that moss appears, we will fertilize the lawn and scarify it regularly. If we have it in a shady and humid area, we will use an anti-moss product (such as this).

With all these tips, we are sure that we can enjoy a great green carpet.
