Echinocactus grusonii in garden

If we live in an area with a warm climate and where frosts do not occur or are very weak and short-lived, it can be very interesting to design a cactus garden on our land. These plants are lovers of high temperatures and are not usually affected by as many pests as other plant beings.

However, to grow and develop properly they need us to provide them with water and fertilizer on regular basis. Thus, we will largely avoid the risk of them spoiling prematurely.

For years, cacti have been thought to be very drought-resistant plants, to the point that they have been planted in regions where rainfall is very scarce. After a few years they began to show obvious signs of disease, such as spots between their ribs, aphids that do not allow the flowers to open normally, or growth arrest, among others.

If we want to have a well-kept cactus garden we have to take into account that they will need at least three weekly irrigations during the summer and one a week the rest of the year. For this reason, it is very important to install a drip irrigation system so that they do not lack anything and can look spectacular all year round.

Likewise, they need to be paid from spring to summereither with a specific fertilizer for cacti that we can find already prepared in the nurseries, or with Blue Nitrofoska, pouring from a small spoonful -to small plants that measure between 5 and 30cm in height- or a handful -to the most large that measure around or more than 1m-.

Only in this way can we be completely sure that we will have perfectly healthy succulents, something that will undoubtedly make them look very pretty.
