List of riparian or margin plants

Japanese pond

The ponds are a real wonder. They turn out to be very practical since allow us to have delicate plants in our area without having to worry about the problems that low humidity can cause. They are also an excellent option when you want to have fish, or you are looking for a way to refresh the environment.

Now, a pond without plants … is not a complete pond. Take a look at the riparian or margin plants that we show you below.

Alisma plantago-aquatic

alisma

The Alisma plantago-aquaticbetter known as Plantago or Water Plantain, is a herbaceous, perennial plant that can reach one meter in height. Native to Europe and Asia, it withstands frost without difficulty. It should also be added that it is not demanding in terms of the type of soil, so if you have a calcareous soil or, on the contrary, very sandy, you can plant a few plantains and have a fabulous pond.

Sedge

Carex oshimensis Evergold

Plants of the genus Sedge they are very interesting and resistant. So much so, that it is one of the plants that is most planted in areas where there is grass, since its water needs are very similar to those of these herbs. They are native to practically the whole world, especially North America and Europe. They grow to a height of approximately 60-70cm, with a diameter of 30-40cm, so they turn out to be good candidates for defining the edge of your pond.

Hydrocotyle leucocephala

Hydrocotyle leucocephala

If the Carex will help us to define the margins, the Hydrocotyle they can be, for example, just behind, closer to the water. They are creeping plants, with very pretty simple green leaves. They live in a wide variety of climates; thus, they support frosts of a certain intensity (down to -5ºC), and extreme high temperatures (40-50ºC, provided they do not lack humidity).

iris sibirica

Now that we have the green plants, let’s give it some color with the water lilies. Some highly recommended are iris sibiricabulbous plants whose flowers have a white or purple color. They grow to a height of one meter, and bloom in spring. In addition to having beautiful flowers, they also withstand the cold.

Lobelia cardinalis

Lobelia cardinalis

The Lobelia cardinalis It is a perennial herbaceous plant whose ornamental value is very high, as you can see in the image. Originally from North and Central America, it grows to a height of one meter or a meter and a half maximum, and resists the cold down to -4ºC. What more could you want?
