Flores

¿You have plants whose flowers do not open and you do not know why? If so, we will try to unravel the mystery. The vast majority of plants need to flourish to propagate their species, so they need favorable climatic conditions to guarantee success. But sometimes, once they take out what looks like it has to be a very beautiful flower, it doesn’t open.

The climate may have changed, or we may have changed something in the way we care for plants. Any little detail, any small change can affect our garden in one way or another or to our pots. Which translates into changes in the plant and, as a consequence, also in the flowers, which may not open.

Nor should we forget our “dear” friends the insects, who make an appearance every year. Some are very beneficial for the garden, such as bees or butterflies. But there are others that, if left unchecked, can destroy the health of your plants. in a matter of days. These insects are not bad, since they all have their role in the ecosystem, but it is recommended to control them to prevent them from becoming serious problems for the pots or the garden.

When a plant decides that it will not open the flowers, it may be because:

  • It’s spreading too much: We must be careful with excess watering, as we remember that not all plants need the same amount of water. Some, like rose bushes, can cover the buds with a very fine film -which is not seen with the naked eye- preventing the flowers from opening. They do this because they are unable to absorb water at the speed with which we water, and it is much more important at this time to solve the problem that the roots are having, rather than flower. The solution is to let the substrate dry between waterings. If the substrate is very, very humid, it can be taken out of the pot, and wrapped with cotton. This is a material that absorbs water very efficiently, something that will do very well for the plant.
  • Pests on flowers: The flowers can be attacked by various pests and / or diseases. The most common are: thrips, mealybug and botrytis.
-Trips: they are tiny, tiny insects that can damage flowers in a matter of days. The symptoms are: gray spots on the leaves, and brown on the flowers. It has to be treated with insecticide and repeated every 15 days.
-Cochineal: There are several types of mealybugs. The best known are the cottony and the one popularly known as “San José louse.” It is treated with anticochineal.
-Brotritis: Botrytis is caused by an opportunistic fungus. It appears when there is excess watering and the plant begins to weaken. Attacks flowers, stems. leaves… A clear sign that the plant has this fungus is the gray mold that the affected parts of the plant present. It has to be treated with a fungicide, remove the affected parts, and reduce the risks.
  • Excess heat or cold: If it is too cold or hot, there are plants that decide to pause flowering.
