Saffron

Our protagonist today is a bulbous plant that is very present in the kitchen in the form of a spice. His scientific name is Crocus sativusand it is popularly known by the name of saffron. Its beautiful lilac flowers sprout in spring, as soon as the risk of frost has passed.

It is a very grateful plant, which with minimal care you can enjoy it year after year.

Crocus sativus

The crocus bulb should be planted in the fall or early winter. It can be had both in a pot and in the garden; If you choose to have it in a pot, you can use a universal garden substrate, as it will grow without problems in any type of soil. The same happens if you decide to plant it in your garden; In fact, regardless of the quality of the soil, it will be enough to make a small hole – the size of the bulb – and cover it with a thin layer of soil.

To make the arrival of spring even more exceptional and colorful, a trick that I am going to give you is the following: together with the Crocus sativus, plant cyclamen bulbs and / or other bulbous plants that reach a height of about 20 or 30cm (which is what the flowering stem of the saffron usually measures once adult). If you don’t know how long they will measure, you just have to look at the back of the bags where the bulbs are packed, or ask at the nursery.
