Rosebush

The roses are shrubby plants that need to be watered properly, and that have been decorating gardens, terraces and balconies for a long time. And it is that, Who can resist the beauty of its flowers? There are red, pink, white, navy blue, bicolor, … In addition, they resist frost and have a certain resistance to drought, although as we will see below, it is not advisable to make you go through that bad drink.

Its method of reproduction is relatively simple. You will see how in a few steps, you will be able to have new copies of that rose bush that you like so much.

Farming

Rose

Before thinking about reproducing our rose bush, it is important to know how it is cared for. Well, the first thing is to choose if we want to have it in a pot or in the ground, since depending on where we plant it, the frequency of waterings will be different.

Pot or soil

-Flower pot

Rose bushes can live in potsor in planters together with others of its kind. If we decide to have it there, the next step is to acquire a specific substrate for these plants, or to make the mixture ourselves, which will be composed of 70% black peat, 20% perlite and 10% organic fertilizer (humus of worm, horse manure, … whatever we prefer).

To transplant it, we will carefully remove it from its old pot, fill its new pot a little with the substrate that we have bought or prepared, we will introduce the plant, and we will finish filling. The final step is to water liberally.

-Floor

If what we want is to have it on the ground, we will make a hole approximately twice the height of the pot. For example, if the pot is about 20cm high, the hole will be 40cm deep. Once done, we will fill halfway with substrate, we will place the rose bush, and we will finish filling.

And finally we will water abundantly.

Location and irrigation

Rose bushes are plants that they need to be in full sun to be able to grow and develop properly. They also need light to produce lots of beautiful flowers. That is why the ideal location will be the one with direct light, ideally all day long.

Irrigation will depend on whether it is in a pot or on the ground, in addition to the climate of the place. As a general rule, those that are in pot should be watered once or twice a week, and weekly those that are in the ground. The frequency will vary if it is a rainy climate, or if it is very hot and dry.

Well, now that my rose bush is settled and I know how to take care of it, how can I reproduce it?

Rose

The rose bushes can be reproduced by seeds or by cuttings taken in February.

Seeds

By seeds is a method that is practically not used because they take longer to flower. But do not worry. If you want to try it with your precious rose bush, you have to do the following:

  • To get seeds from a rose bush, the first thing to do is make sure that the flower has been pollinated. This will be known when the petals have fallen and a kind of rigid “ball” has formed (called a rose hip, which will be fully ripe by autumn), inside which the seeds will be found.
  • Collect and extract the seeds.
  • They are well cleaned to remove pulp residues.
  • They go into water for about 12 hours.
  • And they are sown directly in seedbeds.

Cuttings

The method of reproduction by cuttings or stakes is used to get new plants identical to the mother plant, and that bloom in a shorter period of time. It takes place mainly in the month of February in the northern hemisphere, but it could also be tried in October. Proceed as follows:

  • Two or three branches are cut that have at least six buds where the leaves sprout.
  • The substrate is prepared, which must be specific for rose bushes or we can make the aforementioned mixture ourselves.
  • The pot is filled.
  • The cutting three buds is introduced. You can 4, but it is best to enter only three.
  • We will water abundantly.
  • And finally we will place it in a place where it does not get direct light, until we see that the new leaves begin to sprout.
