The canine rose It is a very special shrub that can be had in all types of gardens, even in pots, since it grows only up to 3 meters in height and withstands frosts of up to -20ºC without problems.

In addition to being very easy to care for, it must also be said that it has very interesting medicinal properties. To find out what they are, I invite you to meet one of the most beautiful wild roses in the world: the dog rose.

Characteristics of the Rosa canina

This is a shrubby plant with deciduous leaves that is commonly known by the names of Wild Rose, Escaramujo, Zarzarrosa, Agavanzo or Dog Rose. The latter is really very curious, but it is believed that in the past it was used to cure rabies. Its stems are long, and have strong stingersso you have to be careful when handling.

The flowers appear grouped in clusters, and are about 5cm in diameter. They sprout in spring-summer, and if all goes well, the fruits, called rose hips, will finish maturing in late summer or early fall. It will be then when they can be eaten.

The care it requires is practically the same as for any other rose bush, namely:

  • Location: outside, in full sun or semi-shade (it must give a minimum of 4 hours of direct light).
  • Irrigation: frequent. We will water 3-4 times a week in summer, and every 5-6 days the rest of the year.
  • Transplant: in spring.
  • Pruning: the withered flowers will be removed, and the stems will be trimmed to maintain a compact, more or less ball-shaped style.
  • Reproduction: by seeds in spring, or by cuttings in late winter (February-March in the Northern Hemisphere).
  • Soil / substrate: it grows in all types of soils, but if it is in a pot it is important that we use universal growing medium mixed with perlite.
  • Subscriber: during the warm months it can be paid with liquid organic fertilizers.

Is used as digestive, anti-inflammatory, laxative and also
to calm nervesAs tonic as a astringent. To do this, you simply have to make a jam with the paste of the fruits, or you can use the petals once they are candied.
