However, they are easy to avoid; and it is that, although it is true that the experience in the end is the one that ago to the gardener, it doesn’t hurt to get help, right? So, below you will discover the Common gardening mistakes and how to avoid them.

Poor selection of species

Azalea in bloom

When we go to a nursery it is very simple that we are amazed by the variety of plants that there are, and that we want to take some home. But… keep in mind that not all of them require the same care since they can come from very different places.

Therefore, it is important that we take into account the climate in our area, the existing conditions in the place where we want to put the plantand of course the needs of the plant itself.

Do not pay

Organic fertilizer for plants

All plants, regardless of whether they are in soil or in a pot, need to feed throughout the growing seasonwhich usually coincides with the spring and summer seasons, lasting until autumn in climates with mild frosts, or can last practically the whole year in the tropics where the rains are abundant.

This means that they will need a regular supply of nutrients in order to be able to grow and develop properly, a task that is very simple to perform since today we have fertilizers for almost any type of plant .

Water bad

Watering the plants.

Controlling irrigation is by far the most difficult to achieve. Many times we think that we are not watering it enough, or that on the contrary we are giving it more water than necessary and in the end the plant spoils and finally dies.

Well then. We can reduce the risk of these problems appearing if:

  • We check the humidity of the soil before watering: to do this, simply insert a thin wooden stick to the bottom and see how much soil has adhered to it. If it comes out practically clean, we can water.
  • We use a substrate that drains well– A very compact soil will not allow excess water to drain, which will cause the roots to rot. Here you have more information about substrates.
  • We do not wet the leaves or flowers: when we water, we only have to water the soil, otherwise the plant could burn and / or rot.
  • We water in the afternoon: this way we will prevent the water from evaporating too quickly.

Inappropriate location

Cycas rolled

Plants need light to growbut this can lead to confusion. Sometimes we buy one and put it directly in the sun, which hurts it because it is not used to it (unless it has been growing outside without any protection against direct light). The Cycas, cactus, most of the palms, the horticultural ones,… all these plants have to be exposed to the star king. But, How to do it without burning?

Ideally acclimatize them little by little. Thus, for example, during a period of five months we can extend the time during which direct sun hits them by one hour, starting in spring or autumn, which is when the sun’s rays are less direct.

With these tips, we can enjoy the pots and the garden without having to worry, or not excessively .
