What is this invention about?

For urban and home gardens, they come in handy to have ecological fertilizers without any treatment that does not contaminate our place or our water. A compost bin is a machine that generates compost through the degradation of organic matter. This compost can be used as a fertilizer. There is a type of composting called vermicomposting, which tries to generate compost through the degradation of organic matter as a result of the biological activity of earthworms.

There is a whole trade on the internet of various species of worms that are more efficient in degrading organic matter and helping to oxygenate the earth. The sale of these worms for vermicomposting is an activity that is being seen more and more in the world of ecological urban gardens.

The compost bin whose “raw material” is earthworms has dimensions of only 80 × 40 cm. In this way we can have organic fertilizer without taking up too much space. In addition, we will gain the advantage that we will not waste vegetable waste.

The creator of this composter baptized this great invention as “The worm farm”. In this “farm” the worms begin to carry out their feeding process. As a result of the digestion and defecation of the worms, we obtain the liquid humus of the worms that will help us with the fertilization of the automatic irrigation water. In the lower part of the farm are the seedbeds for the next sowing, closing the cycle to obtain our fresh vegetables throughout the year without agro-toxins.

How to make our own compost bin

In order to have this wonder in our urban orchard or in our garden, we must drill a 4-inch tube every 15 cm to form steps through which we will introduce the carbon filter and it will remain perforated, in such a way that at the bottom they remain various holes for water drainage.

Perforations are made in the base of the other container to be able to contain the worms and it will be fixed in the upper part of the previous container that already has a tube. A hose is inserted through the 4-inch tube to introduce the irrigation water through there. Finally humus (soil) is introduced into the tube, we sow our seedlings to the taste of each one. The worms are placed in the container with a little soil and a portion of vegetable waste.

So that too much sunlight does not pass through and does not affect the activity of the worms, a small acrylic lid is made to prevent the passage of light. Three holes are made in the lid in which in two of them you can plant tomato beans or any type of plant that needs a certain height.

To finish our compost, a water pump is installed to the hose and It is programmed to do watering intervals throughout the day. We fill the pump container with water preferably without chlorine and with liquid worm humus.

As you can see, there are homemade and ecological inventions that can help us in our gardens in a sustainable and healthy way, both for the environment and for us. Thanks to worms, we can turn unprocessed plant waste into a good quality natural fertilizer. This fertilizer goes to the water container where it is used to water and fertilize the plants in our garden. Once our plants are ready to harvest, we can replace them with other seedlings to germinate them continuously and have a constant production.
