Trellis vine cultivation

Vine cultivation on trellises

The vine is a climbing shrub widely grown in temperate regions around the world. Grapes are edible fruits that are so good that you want to have some specimens in the garden. But, to avoid complications arising, one of the things that is done more and more frequently is to grow them on a trellis. In this way, we will be able to treat each specimen as it deserves, thus ensuring that it has a good development making the most of the available space.

However, it will not be enough to plant it, but we will also have to know how is the trellis vine pruningsince this is a job that will depend, to a large extent, the amount of fruits that it produces. Let’s see what steps we have to follow to prune our vines.

How is the trellis culture installed?

The trellis is a structure formed by wires and / or posts on which the branches of the plants that we are going to grow will grow.in this case the vine. What is done is, once the specimen is planted, keep it attached to a stake so that it forms a trunk about 40-80cm high. From this, two branches will be allowed to grow on a fixed wire: one that will be guided to the right and the other to the left.

It is important to leave a distance of at least 90 centimeters between vines so that it can grow correctly.

When and how is it pruned?

The vine pruned in early winterwhen the leaves begin to fall or have already fallen. To do this, we will use pruning shears to remove dry, diseased or weak branches and to trim the rest.

  • First year: after the first season what you do is choose a branch that we see has more strength and vigor than the others. Then, we cut it about 4-5cm, so the new ones will sprout better.
  • From the second: you have to remove those branches that lose strength and leave only those that have more health.

I hope it has been useful to you .
