When planting artichoke cuttings it is advisable to use rooting agents

Once we are clear that we want to reproduce our artichoke plant through cuttings, it is time to get down to work. Let’s see step by step how to do it:

  1. Cut the cuttings: To get a cutting we must cut a piece of the mother plant, either from the stem or from the rhizome. It is important that this piece contains at least one yolk, although it is preferable that there are two or three.
  2. Impregnate the base of the cuttings with rooting agents (optional): Although it is true that the use of rooting agents is not essential, it is highly advisable. By impregnating the base of the cuttings with liquid hormones, we will favor their rooting.
  3. Plant the cuttings: Once we have obtained the cuttings, it is time to plant them in the ground, nothing to put them first in water as it is done with other plants. The best thing to do is to place them first in a seedbed, so we can protect them in the event of significant weather changes. When the seedling reaches a certain size, it can be carefully transplanted into the vegetable garden.
  4. To water: Lastly is irrigation. It is important that the substrate stays moist, but without flooding it.

It sucks, right? But before you start with this task, we better highlight a couple of things. In order for the artichoke cuttings to develop correctly, it is best to prepare a well-aerated substrate that is rich in humus and organic matter. Ideally, add a little coarse sand to make it more porous and some compost so that moisture is better maintained.

In general, artichokes do not need excessive fertilization. In fact, mature compost fertilizers are already sufficient, and we must avoid guano and manure at all costs, since they don’t like anything. While it is true that this plant generally adapts well to various types of soil, cuttings should be planted in deep, loose, well-drained soil. It should be said that clayey soils do not suit them at all.

Some research and studies of horticulturists recommend using treatments with rooting to achieve a correct development of the artichoke cuttings. If we treat them with growth regulators that are of the auxin type, we will be able to considerably increase the percentage of success in terms of root formation. In addition, the creation of roots is accelerated and their quality increases. The use of this little help is very simple: Before planting the cuttings in the substrate, we must impregnate the base with the rooting agent. Of course, be careful when handling these products and not ingest them accidentally.
