Hornbeam botanical description

Hornbeam – This is an attractive tree that can often be found in gardens and parks, the height is up to 25 meters.

Hornbeam tree in natural conditions it is found in Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic states, the Caucasus and the Crimea. Crown compact, smooth trunk, silver-gray bark. Diameter trunk 80-100 cm. The trunk is ribbed.

At the bottom of the trunk crust deeply cracked, smooth at the top. Crown broadly cylindrical, spreading, low. shoots shiny, brown, with white lenticels, young – silky, pubescent.

Hornbeam leaves. The leaves are dark green, oval, pointed, corrugated, the veins protrude. In autumn, the color of the leaves changes from dark purple to light yellow.

Grab flowers. The flowers appear at the same time as the leaves. flowers – these are earrings, male and female, up to 6 cm long. During the ripening of the fruits, they become long, up to 15 cm and consist of many three-lobed wrappers, together with which brown-gray ribbed nuts grow together. Common hornbeam forms fruit at 15-20 years of age.

The hornbeam is widely used for decorative purposesit is planted in parks, forest parks, squares, single or group plantings, and the plant looks especially elegant in the role hedge.

The plant has several decorative forms: columnar form– with a narrow crown; pyramidal shape – upright growing, with a narrow pyramidal crown; weeping form – with thin drooping branches; purple – has purple young leaves that turn green over time.

Any shape fits perfectly in every landscape. If you are the owner of a private house, then be sure to plant this gorgeous plant near the house, and put benches for rest under its crown.

It looks very interesting in the design of the park and garden hornbeam black. It is also called Eastern Hornbeam or Grabinnik. This tree is deciduous and small, suitable for small gardens.

Often used for hedges, because it lends itself perfectly to a haircut. In Ukraine, this variety is not very popular, so lovers of exclusive trees should definitely plant such a unique plant.

Landing and care

Where to plant and how to care for a hornbeam? This is the tree that has the highest shade tolerance, unlike other deciduous plants. But, despite this, it grows well both in the sun and in the shade.

Wind resistant and winter hardy. The plant prefers moist, loamy soils with a low lime content. Can’t stand soil salinity.

root system does not tolerate high standing groundwater and soil compaction. to plant hornbeam seedlings needed in early spring or autumn. Container plants can be planted throughout the year.

For seedlings up to 3 m landing hole depth should be 50-70 cm and width 70-90 cm. If heavy soils we recommend to arrange drainage from broken bricks or crushed stone with a layer of 10 cm.

prepared pits fill with cooked fertile substrate, consisting of black soil, soddy and leafy soil and humus in a ratio of 2:2:1:1. 100 g of lime and 100-150 g of complete mineral fertilizer are added to this substrate, and they are carefully distributed at the bottom of the pit so that there is no contact with the roots.

The seedlings are placed in the hole so that the root neck is at the level of the soil surface. planted plants must be wateredper plant at least 30-40 liters.
