Onions should be given the sun daily, only then can they grow stronger.

Soil type

The onion will need a type of soil that is rich in nutrients, valid for planting and cultivation. The most recommended is to use a sandy loam soil; avoid those that are excessively sandy or clayey.

The problem with these last soils is that they would not allow the onion to develop, much less flourish.

Water

Another key that should be clear to us about when to plant onions is that they need very little water for their development.

Specifically, they will need more water when their bulbs start to develop. Once you have done this, the amount of water will be minimal.

The onion is susceptible to extreme changes in temperature and humidity; These changes could damage its structure, causing cracks that could kill it.

When to plant onions?

Onions can be planted in the summer, winter, or spring.

  • Summer: If you decide to plant them in summer, wait at the end of the season. We will place the seeds with enough space between them and then we will cover the plant pots with compost (with 1,5cm more or less). If winter is very extreme in the area where you live, the best thing you can do is to use tunnels to protect the onions from the cold. Once the spring season arrives we will proceed to thin plants.
  • Winter: When it comes to knowing when to plant winter onions, you should know that you can do this at any time of the season. However, if winter is hard in your area, the best thing you can do is plant them inside your house.

When planting them in winter we will have to transplant them once spring arrives. This will have to be done when the garden soil is completely dry, or in the final plant, pots to be placed on a terrace or balcony.

  • Spring: It is the most complicated period for planting onions. Just do it if you live in a place where the summer is cool and humid, and if your intention is not to store the onions. The way of planting onions in this period is the same as in summer, with the only difference that it will be necessary to clear about 10cm between one plant and the other, once each of them has reached 10 centimeters.

Maintenance

It will be necessary to control the onion until we verify that the vertices of it begin to turn yellow. It will be at that moment when we will have to twist them until their necks break. We must leave these necks growing with the rest of the plant, and at the same time having contact with the earth.

It will be at this moment when the onion begins to ripen.

It will also be necessary to proceed to lift the bulbs of the onion.

We will let everything rest in the sun for a period of 15 days.
