Blue corn

Have you heard of blue corn? In Latin America it is quite common, but in the rest of the world… it is very difficult to find it. Despite that, its cultivation is very simple; not in vain, they are produced by the same species zea mays.

What are its characteristics and properties?

Blue corn is a variety originally from Mexico. The plant is the same as the one that produces white corn; that is, herbaceous, up to 2 meters high, long and green leaves, but the ear is bluish in color that draws a lot of attention.

Although it is the one that is consumed the least, it is the most nutritious since it contains fatty acids, vitamin A, E, calcium, phosphorus and also more fiber than most cereals.

If we talk about its medicinal properties, we must know that it is antioxidant, anticancer, antineurodegenerative, and anti-inflammatory.

How is it grown?

If you want to grow it, we recommend you follow our advice:

  • Location: outside, in full sun.
  • Earth:
    • Orchard: grows in all types of soils, although it prefers those that absorb water quickly and they are rich in organic matter.
    • Pot: you can use universal growing medium.
  • Irrigation: water 4-5 times a week in summer, and a little less the rest.
  • Subscriber: throughout the season you can pay with Organic fertilizers.
  • Multiplication: by seeds in spring.
  • Planting or transplanting time: in spring. If it is potted, transplant as soon as roots grow out of the drainage holes.
  • Harvest: in summer / early autumn.
