Everything you need to know to create a vertical garden at home

A small patio, a balcony, a terrace, or a simple wall are suitable places to build a vertical garden and produce a large number of fruits, vegetables, and greens. To do it, you don’t have to have a lot of experience in agriculture, so if this is your case, read on to learn how to do it.

As I mentioned before, you can create urban vertical gardens in any free place in your house and without dry land, but these must meet a series of conditions to ensure excellent production of edible vegetables:

  • In order for the plants to develop properly, the place must be exposed to sunlight for at least two hours.
  • If you are going to create a vertical garden on the terrace or on the balcony, you will have to protect it from the winds.
  • Place the urban garden near a source of drinking water to ensure safe constant watering.
  • All the containers you use must have good drainage to avoid water stagnation, either from irrigation or from rain.
  • Wash the reused materials and clean them very well so that there are no remnants of toxic substances.

Vertical garden with pallets

Of all the objects that are usually discarded when they are still in condition, the pallets are the most useful, since with them you can create a beautiful vertical garden. If you have an option to choose, choose a pallet that is in good condition and does not protrude nails or chips.

Once you have the pallet, sand and varnish it. Get a waterproof cloth and cover the part that will be on the side of the wall. Layer a few layers to make it sturdy and cover the bottom of the pallet.

Choose the plants you want and make various combinations. You can even put together a vertical garden with parsley, lettuce, and other aromatic plants. Once you’ve planted, water and let the plants settle with the pallet on the ground for a couple of weeks. Then lift it up and place your vertical garden with pallets wherever you want.

Vertical vegetable garden with bottles

It does not take too much to create a vertical garden with bottles. Vertical gardens are increasingly used by those with limited spaces in their homes. To have a vertical garden it is important to have an availability of sunlight of two to six hours a day.

Take a couple of plastic bottles and cut off the bottom. Drill two holes in the sides of the neck of the bottle and fill with organic humus. Locate in the place that you have destined for your vertical garden with bottles. Now cut the bottom off into another bottle and fill it with compost. Remove the cap from the bottle and insert it into the other.

Secure both with wire to the pole. Continue doing the same as with the second bottle until you have a total of five bottles. Now to bottle six you must cut about 20cm from the beak and place it without a cap inside the previous one. Cut the bottom of the next bottle and make a hole in the center of the cap. Assemble it in the previous one and add water to it.

Make a little window in each bottle with the help of a scalpel and plant plants that require little care such as coriander, basil, rosemary, parsley, etc., or seedlings.

As you can see, having a vertical garden at home is quite easy and can even serve to improve the appearance of a wall, especially if you add ornamental plants or aromatic herbs.
