Origin and characteristics

Galician cabbage, whose scientific name is Brassica oleracea var. viridis, it is a biennial herb – its life cycle lasts two years – in cold climates and perennial in climates without frost. It develops a short stem from which the leaves sprout, which are large, whole and petiolate, dark green in color. With them salads and soups are made, they are used as a main accompaniment or as a garnish with meats, and in stews.

It is very easy to grow, but so that there is no doubt, we are going to tell you below everything you need to know so that unforeseen events do not arise.

What are their cares?

If you dare to cultivate it, we recommend providing it with the following cares:

  • Location: outside, in full sun.
  • Earth:
    • Pot: universal growing substrate mixed with 30% perlite. It has to be large, about 40cm in diameter, and deep.
    • Garden: fertile, with good drainage. Plant the specimens in rows, leaving a distance between them of about 30cm.
  • Irrigation: frequent, especially in summer. In general, it should be watered 4-5 times a week during the hottest season, and every 5-6 days the rest of the year.
  • Subscriber: throughout the season, with Organic fertilizers once a month.
  • Harvest: they are harvested before they reach their final size, regardless of age, since the flavor is always the same.
  • Multiplication: by seeds in spring and summer. It can also be done in autumn if there is no frost or if you have a greenhouse. Direct sowing in seedbed.
  • Rusticity: supports up to 0º.
