How the Earth breathes

We are extremely lucky to live on a planet where there is a lot of life, not only animal, but also and especially plant life. These beings were the first to inhabit the Earth and are probably the last to disappear. Before that happens, they will breathe, they will bloom, and their leaves will fall billions of times for the benefit of all of us here.

As we know, not all regions of the world have the same climate, nor are the two hemispheres experiencing the same season. Depending on the conditions of the place, the plants adapt. Thus, while in the Northern Hemisphere they prepare for winter by letting their leaves fall, in the South they do just the opposite: produce more leaf blades to continue growing. Would you like to know how the Earth breathes in a year? Keep reading.

Earth respiration for a year

Impressive, right? Created by the NOAA STAR Satellite Research and Applications Center , this animation visualizes the 52-week vegetation cycle of the year 2016 . In the Northern Hemisphere the changes that occur during the seasons are particularly interesting. With the arrival of the spring rains, the plants can grow without problems at a fairly rapid rate; however, during the summer the drought comes and the fields lose many of their green members.

On the other hand, the nature of the Southern Hemisphere with the rise in temperatures in Australia, South Africa and Brazil also has a bit of a hard time. In India the change is spectacular: it is increasingly dry from the beginning of the year until July, and then with the monsoons it explodes with life again .

Although we are having a significant impact on the environment, to the point that there are those who claim that the natural balance has already been broken, this cycle will be part of our lives forever .
