What do I need to build a fire pit?

refractory bricks

To spend very pleasant moments in the garden during the cool season of the year, it is very important that you get these materials to build your fire pit :

  • Firebrick
  • Gravel
  • expanded clay
  • Stick of a certain height (about 40cm)
  • String
  • Hoe
  • Spray paint
  • Bubble level
  • Beton Fast Adhesive
  • Gloves. They can be for gardening, but if you have delicate hands or want to have them better protected, get construction.
  • OPTIONAL: Arctic quartzite or other fire resistant material

First of all, you must inform yourself about the local legislation regarding the distance that the bonfire must be from the neighbors’ houses and from your own house, as well as the regulations of use . Not all places can make a fire any day of the year; In fact, to give you an idea, in the Balearic Islands we are only allowed to do it from October 15 to May 1 in and around forest land, and in the rest of the islands it is not recommended during those months, since rainfall is so scarce and the ground is so dry that any grass catches fire too easily.

Once you have done this, you must find the right place to build the bonfire. To avoid problems, it has to be far from septic tanks, filtration areas and plants. The more distance you leave, the better.

Now, nail a stick and tie a rope to the opposite end of which, using spray paint, draw a circle of about 260cm on the ground . You can also choose to wrap the rope around a can of construction marker spray. Once this is finished, you can remove the stick, although I recommend leaving it on so that it is well centered.

Next, you must dig a 10cm deep trench delimited by the paint circle and fill it with a 5cm layer of refractory expanded clay . Compact it well with a shovel, and check with the level that it is straight. Then, draw another circle 61cm from the center and place two rows of firebrick from it, leaving as little space as possible between them. Put them so that the flat side is facing up, and fix the new brick floor with drops of the adhesive.

Finally, fill the joints with refractory mortar whose consistency is similar to that of compact mashed potatoes and cover the space that remains up to the outer circle with gravel.

If you want to embellish your garden fire pit, you can adorn the outside with arctic quartzite or another fire resistant material.lovely garden fire pit
