Looking for the perfect plant
When you want to decorate the office with plants, it is important to take into account several things so as not to spend money on one that will not serve us later. To prevent this from happening, we must know that:
- The plant we choose must be able to be grown throughout its life in a pot: there are palm trees and trees that are often grown as indoor plants, but in the long term they will end up “asking” us to move them to a much larger pot or directly to Earth.
- It must be able to resist drought: the less time we have to dedicate to it, the better. If it can go several days without water, in the event that we are going to take a few days off we will not have to worry about it.
- It must be able to live well with the light conditions in your office: this means that if you work in an office where there is a lot of natural light, cacti and flowering plants will grow better than, for example, an aspidistra or a begonia, the who prefer slightly darker sites.
Selection of plants to decorate the office
Aspidistra
Aspidistra is one of the hardiest houseplants out there. It grows to a height of 50-60cm, which is why it can be kept in offices or large offices , for example, next to the desk. To look beautiful all year round you need very little:
- Irrigation : once a week, or twice in times of heat.
- Substrate : you can use universal growing substrate.
- Subscriber : in spring and summer, with a universal fertilizer following the instructions specified on the package.
- Transplant : every two years.
Cactus
Mammillaria guelzowiana
Most cacti species can be grown in pots throughout their lives. Those of the genus Mammillaria , Rebutia , Gymnocalicium, and many Echinopsis ( E. subdenudata , E. multiplex ) are perfect to have in a very bright office , since they only need these care:
- Irrigation : twice a week in summer, and every 15-20 days the rest of the year. If you have a plate under them, you have to remove the excess water 15 minutes after watering.
- Substrate : it must have very good drainage. It is especially advisable to use pumice or previously washed river sand.
- Subscriber : in spring and summer it should be paid with fertilizers for cacti, following the instructions specified on the package.
- Transplant : every two years.
Creek
Calla produces a very decorative inflorescence, which can be white, orange, or purple depending on the variety. It will look spectacular in any corner , especially at the entrance of the office. These are your care:
- Irrigation : two or three times a week in summer, and every 10 days the rest of the year.
- Substrate : black peat mixed with 30% perlite.
- Subscriber : in spring and summer with a fertilizer for flowering plants, following the instructions on the package.
- Transplant : every year.
Dracaena
The Dracaena is a shrub that, although it can reach over 2m in height, its growth slows down so much in a pot that it can be grown in it throughout its life without problems. Its leaves are so pretty that you will surely brighten up your work day just by looking at them. These are your care:
- Irrigation : twice a week in summer, and every 15 days the rest of the year.
- Substrate : it must have good drainage. You can mix universal growing substrate with perlite in equal parts.
- Fertilizer : during the spring and summer, with a universal fertilizer or with one for cacti and succulent plants (it is not a succulent, but having similar nutritional needs, it will serve you well).
- Transplant : every two-three years.
ferns
Pteris berteroana
Ferns are very elegant and decorative plants that can be used to decorate offices where there is not much light from outside . There are many types, but the most advisable are those of the Nephrolepsis or Pteris genus, which are also the ones that you can find more easily in nurseries and garden stores. Your care is:
- Irrigation : twice a week in summer, and once every 10 days the rest of the year. Use rain water or without lime.
- Substrate : it is important that it has good drainage, but at the same time is rich in organic matter. A good mixture would be the following: 50% black peat or mulch + 30% perlite (or any other similar material) + 10% earthworm humus, and the last 10% would correspond to the volcanic clay or clay balls to be placed inside the pot before filling it.
- Subscriber : in spring and summer, with a universal fertilizer for plants, or with liquid guano following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Transplant : every two years.
dwarf palm
If you want to give your office a tropical touch, go ahead and put a dwarf palm tree. Its scientific name is Phoenix roebellinii , and it barely reaches 2m in height. Of course, you have to know that it will grow well if a lot of light enters . Here is your care guide:
- Irrigation : every 3 days in summer, and every week the rest of the year.
- Substrate : 60% black peat + 30% perlite + 10% earthworm humus.
- Subscriber : in spring and summer, with a fertilizer for palm trees following the instructions specified on the package.
- Transplant : every two or three years.
Sanseviera
The Sanseviera is an ideal type of plant for beginners . It can be both in very bright offices and in those that do not receive much light and do not need as much water as other plants. But how do you take care of yourself? In this way:
- Irrigation : one or two weekly waterings will suffice in summer, and one fortnightly the rest of the year.
- Substrate : universal growing substrate can be used, but it is convenient to put a first layer of clay balls or volcanic clay to improve drainage.
- Subscriber : in spring and summer with a fertilizer for cacti and succulent plants (it is not a succulent, but its nutritional needs are similar).
- Transplant : every 2-3 years.
