How to grow caigua

The caigua is a plant that grows lying on the ground, which is known as a trailing plant. It has hooks called tendrils through which it is able to adhere to trees, plants, sticks, etc., by climbing through them. It can reach a height of between 3 and 5 meters, which depends on the conditions that it achieves for its development, especially the nutritional and environmental ones.

Caigua cultivation

Here we leave you the basic tips so that you can cultivate the caigua:

  • Soil : it needs the soil to be loose and very well prepared, with a depth of between 20-40 centimeters. The substrate has to be a mixture of good fertilizers, such as compost or worm castings, always in generous quantities.
  • Temperature : it prefers cold climates to warmer ones, thus achieving the best conditions for its development. Ideally, it can be at a temperature between 14 and 22ºC.
  • Irrigation : it needs a lot of water during all the phases of its cultivation, but always avoiding that it comes into contact with the base of the stem as it could rot. Water as you see that it needs it so that it is always wet.
  • Harvest : it begins more or less 3 months after sowing and usually produces between 8 and 20 fruits per specimen, an amount that depends on the conditions under which it has grown. The amount of fruits also depends on the size they are, since the smaller they are, the greater the quantity there will be, since there will be more nutrients to develop them. You have to harvest with scissors to avoid damaging the stems.

Characteristics of the caigua

It has green fruits that have thorns and that are born from the female flowers, which are pollinated by insects such as bees or wasps or also by the wind.

They get the pollen from the male flowers, which grow in groups and surround the female ones.
