Poor selection of species

azalea in bloom

When we go to a nursery it is very easy for us to be amazed by the variety of plants that there are, and that we want to take some home. But… we must bear in mind that not all of them require the same care as they can come from very different places.

Therefore, it is important that we take into account the climate in our area , the existing conditions in the place where we want to put the plant , and of course the needs of the plant being itself .

not pay

Organic fertilizer for plants

All plants, regardless of whether they are in the ground or in pots, need to be fed throughout the growing season , which usually coincides with the spring and summer seasons, stretching into autumn in climates with mild frosts, or can last practically all year. year in the tropics where rainfall is abundant.

This means that they will need a regular supply of nutrients in order to be able to grow and develop properly, a task that is very easy to carry out since today we have fertilizers for almost any type of plant 🙂 .

watering poorly

Watering the plants.

Controlling irrigation is by far the most difficult thing to achieve. Many times we think that we are not watering it enough, or that on the contrary we are giving it more water than necessary and in the end the plant spoils and finally dies.

As well. We can reduce the risk of these problems appearing if:

  • We check the humidity of the soil before watering : for this it will be enough to introduce a thin wooden stick to the bottom and see how much soil has adhered to it. If it comes out practically clean, we can water.
  • We use a substrate that drains well : a very compact soil will not allow excess water to drain, which will cause the roots to rot. Here you have more information about substrates.
  • We do not wet the leaves or flowers : when we water, we only have to water the soil, otherwise the plant could burn and/or rot.
  • We water in the afternoon : this way we will prevent the water from evaporating too quickly.

Improper location

Cycas revoluta

Plants need light to grow , but this can lead to confusion. Sometimes we buy one and put it directly in the sun, which harms it as it is not used to it (unless it has been grown outside without any protection from direct light). The Cycas , the cacti , most of the palm trees , the horticultural ones,… all these plants have to be exposed to the king star. But how to do it without burning?

The ideal is to acclimatize them little by little . Thus, for example, over a period of five months we can lengthen the time during which they receive direct sunlight by one hour, starting in spring or autumn, which is when the sun’s rays are less direct.
