The Sage flocks It is a very interesting herbaceous plant to have in the gardens and / or in the patios of homes with a warm-temperate climate. Its height rarely exceeds one meter, and its flowers can be of various colors, from red to white.

Also, it doesn’t take much to dazzle us with its beauty. In fact, you could say that it is a plant for beginners.

Origin and characteristics

Our protagonist is a herbaceous plant known as fall sage, native to southeast Texas, the Chihuahuan Desert and San Luis Potosí, the latter belonging to Mexico. Grows to a height of between 30 and 120cmby just over half the width. Its stems are held upright, and glabrous leaves of just under 2,5cm long sprout from them.

The flowers are between 0,5 and 2,5cm long, and can be pink, white, lavender, violet, apricot, scarlet or red.

There are various cultivars:

  • Big Pink: with pink flowers.
  • Desert Pastel: pale apricot flowers with yellow spots.
  • Furman Red: is a Texas cultivar that produces red flowers during the fall.
  • Cherry Head: it is a cultivar that flourishes without difficulty in hot and humid climates.
  • Purple Pastel: blooms in fall.

Do you want to have a copy? Then we recommend you take care of it in the following way:

  • Location: it must be outside, in full sun.
  • Earth:
    • Pot: you can use universal growing medium.
    • Garden: grows in a wide variety of soils, but prefers those with good drainage.
  • Irrigation: it has to be watered 4-5 times a week during the summer, and every 3 days the rest.
  • Subscriber: advisable to pay in spring and summer with organic fertilizers. A monthly supply of guano or compost will make it grow healthy and strong. But yes, if you have it in a pot, use liquid fertilizers.
  • Multiplication: by seeds in spring.
  • Rusticity: it resists weak frosts down to -4ºC, provided they are essential and of short duration.
