How to reproduce rosemary

Rosemary

Rosemary is a Mediterranean plant widely used to decorate gardens, patios and balconies, as well as to flavor different dishes. Its cultivation and maintenance is very simple, I would even say that it is one of those that can be taken care of practically alone if they are in the ground. And the only thing you need is sun and little water.

For this reason it never hurts to have a copy, or several, because you know that you will always be able to enjoy its beauty and its benefits. But is there a way to get it without spending a lot of money? The truth is that yes. Find out how to reproduce rosemary. : )

Sowing rosemary

Rosemary seeds

We are going to start with the somewhat more complicated method but which for many can be more rewarding: that of sowing their seeds. As it is not easy to find them in our own plantsand taking into account that an envelope with more than 10 seeds costs only 1 euro or 1 euro and a few cents, Ideally, we should visit a nursery, agricultural warehouse or garden store to buy it one spring daywhich is when they are sown.

Once at home, what we will do is the following:

  1. The first thing to do is put the seeds in a glass of water for 24 hours. Thus, the next day we can discard those that are not viable, which will be the ones that remain floating.
  2. Afterwards, a pot of about 10,5 cm in diameter is filled with universal cultivation substrate.
  3. Then, we sprinkle copper or sulfur on the surface of the substrate to prevent the appearance of fungi.
  4. Next, we put a maximum of three seeds, a little separated from each other, in the pot.
  5. Now, we cover them with a thin layer of substrate, enough so that the wind cannot carry them away.
  6. Finally, with the help of a sprayer we moisten the substrate well.

What is left to do? Practically nothing: place the pot outside, in semi-shade, and keep the substrate always humid but not flooded. A) Yes the seeds will not take more than two weeks (more or less) to germinate.

Multiplication by cuttings

This other method is, so to speak, faster and sometimes much more efficient. To multiply the rosemary by cuttings it will be enough to do the following:

  1. In autumn, we will cut a twig that we see is healthy and strong.
  2. Then we will remove some lower leaves.
  3. Next, we impregnate the base with rooting hormones in powder or with homemade rooting agents.
  4. Finally, we plant it in a pot with vermiculite that we will keep moist but not waterlogged.

After about a month it will emit roots.

I hope it has served you .
