What is the plantain plant like?

What are the characteristics?

Our protagonist it is a perennial herb Originally originating from Europe and Asia that has been introduced all over the world, except at the poles. Its scientific name is plantago majoralthough it is known more as plantain, greater plantain, millet, hare’s ear, plantago, lantén, sietenervios or setecostas.

It develops an unbranched stem that reaches a height of between 30 and 50cmfrom which a short rhizome emerges that is found below ground level. The leaves form basal rosettes with 3-6 longitudinal veins, and are oval. The flowers are produced in dense whitish-green spikes from spring to early fall (May to October in the Northern Hemisphere). The fruit is a pixidium (a type of dried fruit in the form of a capsule) inside which we find brown seeds.

How do you take care of yourself?

If you want to have it in a pot, we recommend that you provide it with the following care:

  • Location: outside, in full sun.
  • Irrigation: 3-4 times a week in summer, somewhat less the rest of the year.
  • Substratum: you can use universal growing medium (you can buy it here!).
  • Subscriber: in spring and summer with a liquid organic fertilizer, such as guano (you can get it here!).
  • Transplant: every 2-3 years.
  • Multiplication: by seeds in spring.
  • Rusticity: it resists frosts down to -7ºC.

For what do you use it?

Plantain is a plant that is used medicinally, hence it is so interesting to grow it. Its medicinal uses are as follows:

  • The leaves, once boiled and warm, are placed as plasters to reduce inflammation of the skin.
  • It is diuretic, expectorant, emollient and healing.
  • In decoction or syrup it is used to combat respiratory problems, such as bronchitis, asthma or colds.
  • In eye drops it is used for conjunctivitis and inflammation of the eyelids.
