Often when it comes to wanting reproduce plants The question arises: how to prevent fungi? Fungi act fast, and when the first filaments appear on the surface of the substrate, their eradication is very difficult.

However, its prevention is simple. This article is intended to be a guide to get healthy and strong plants.

The first thing to know is that, for better prevention, it is recommended:

  1. Use materials (pots, gloves) previously disinfected with hydrogen peroxide, for example. Or:
  2. Use new materials.

The substrate must be newthat has not been used before.

Depending on the species, we will make a mixture or another. For example, in the case of trees, we can use black peat with fifty percent perlite, or we can also use vermiculite with akadama.

Choosing the location is of the utmost importance, since a place that is not sufficiently ventilated and illuminated can become a source of fungus. For this reason, we will place the seedbeds outdoors, in semi-shade or in full sun, always depending on the needs of each species.

Likewise, humidity must also be controlled. If the seedbed that we have chosen is, for example, a tupperware, we will have to remove the lid for a few hours, so that it can ventilate well, since, by maintaining constant humidity, fungi could easily appear.

There are numerous antifungal products on the market. There are some that are ecological, such as cinnamon powder; and there are those that are chemical. For seedbeds, when it comes to prevention, organic ones are more advisable. But if we want to use chemicals, it is advisable to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

How to prevent the spread of fungi?

If we have a seedbed with fungi, we will place it away from the plants and other seedlings that we may have, until, with the help of chemical fungicides, we have managed to eradicate them.

Sometimes, however, it happens that there is no choice but to discard the seeds. We will put the content of the seedbed (substrate and seeds) in a bag and we will throw it in a garbage container, previously closed. The seedbed should be washed with a dishwasher, or with a little fungicide diluted in water.
