Jasmine care

If you want to have a jasmine plant in your garden or in a pot, you will be interested to know what its care is, right? Then below we will explain in detail how it stays healthy and beautiful:

Location

Jasmine grows in both full sun and semi-shadeso that you can put it both under the filtered light that passes through the leaves of a palm tree for example, as in a lattice exposed to the star king directly.

The only thing you should keep in mind is that, if you have it in a pot, you do not have to combine it with any other plant, since otherwise there would be competition between them, and both would do everything possible to get space and the nutrients in the substrate. , which would weaken them.

Soil or substrate

  • the garden: it is necessary that the land is light and fertile. He fears waterlogging.
  • Flower pot: you can fill it with universal growing substrate (for sale here!), but it would not hurt to add a layer of clay (for sale here!) before laying the substrate. This will allow the water to flow out of the drainage holes faster.

Irrigation

You have to water the jasmine frequently, about 2 or 3 times a week during the summer, and the rest of the year once a week. It is important that, if it is kept in a pot, a plate or anything is not placed under it, since the roots do not like to have constant contact with water.

During spring and summer you can fertilize your jasmine plant with fertilizers such as guano (for sale here!), The herbivorous animal manure or worm castings. Thus, you will get it to grow stronger and produce flowers every year.

Pruning

Pruning is advised after floweringsince if it were done before this could not be as beautiful and of quality that we would like it to be. To do this, we will use anvil pruning shears (such as these) previously disinfected, and we cut the stems that are broken, or that have grown too much.

Transplant

It is transplanted in springbefore flowering. It only has to be done if the plant has rooted well in the pot; that is, it will only be done if the roots are sticking out of the drainage holes. In this way, when you take it out, the earth bread will not crumble, and it will be able to resume its growth faster.

Multiplication

It multiplies by seeds and by semi-woody cuttings during spring-summer. Let’s see how it is done:

  • Seeds: they are sown in seedbeds, for example in trays with a hole in their base, filled with universal substrate or for seedbeds (for sale here!). You have to put a maximum of two seeds in each socket, and cover them with a little soil. Then, it is watered and they are put in a sunny or partially shaded area. If the soil is kept moist, they will germinate in about a month.
  • Semi-woody cuttings: pieces of about 30 centimeters are cut, and after impregnating the base with homemade rooting agents or rooting hormones (for sale here!), are planted in a pot with vermiculite previously watered. Finally, they are placed in semi-shade, and the substrate is kept moist. We will know that everything has gone well when we see that leaves sprouts.

Rusticity

There are many types of jasmine, from different places, so the rusticity varies greatly from one species to another. Most of the ones we have seen here withstand frost, as long as it is not very intense; but jasminum sambac for example, it can only be grown outside all year round if the climate is warm.

Enjoy your jasmine!
