Sempervivum: the ones that most resist the cold

They are the succulent plants that best resist the cold. Living in habitats whose minimum temperatures are close to (sometimes even below) 0ºC, our protagonists are more than prepared to grow in cool climates.

But not only do they have this amazing quality, but Sempervivum are also very, very decorative. And as if that were not enough, they can be grown in a pot throughout their lives. What more could you want?Sempervivum tectorum

These magnificent succulent plants are perennial. Belonging to the Crassulaceae family, they grow in a rosette practically at ground level. The Sempervivum genus comprises around 30 species distributed throughout Spain (Canary Islands, mountains of the Iberian Peninsula), the Caucasus and Armenia. Its leaves are remarkably thick; This is because they are used to store water, something they do extremely well, thus being able to develop even in rocky and sunny terrain.

Currently there are many people who are simply in love with these plants. And it is not for less, since their adaptability and ornamental value make them perfect candidates to have on the patio, on the terrace… or in the garden.Sempervivum 'Dark Beauty'

If you choose to have it in a pot, I recommend that you use a porous substrate , since although it could live without problems in black peat alone, it would be necessary to control the risks very much, as it is sensitive to root rot. Thus, a good mixture would be the following: 50% black peat + 30% perlite + 20% river sand.

In principle, the Sempervivum should always be placed in full sun, but in the event that you live in an area where the climate is extremely hot (above 30ºC) it is preferable that you protect them a bit from the sun.Sempervivum 'Crispin'

As we said, they are very resistant to cold, being able to withstand temperatures close to -20ºC

. Although unfortunately they are usually attacked by snails, but there is nothing that cannot be solved with a mollusk repellent 🙂 .

If you have any unresolved doubts, comment on them and together we will help you .
