Hyperion, the tallest tree in the world

There are many tall trees but some specimens stand out for their large dimensions.. They are found at specific points on the world map and set records for being the tallest trees in the world.

Until not long ago, it was believed that the tallest tree in the world it was a red sequoia, better known as “The Giant of the Stratosphere.” He himself rests in the Redwood National Park and the last measurement indicated that it was 113 meters tall. However, it was later discovered that a few meters away there was a tree that surpassed it in height.

In the same Californian national park there lives a tree baptized as Hyperion, which was discovered by a couple of hikers. Originally from that state, it is a Sequoia Sempervirens which has a height of 115,61 meters, thus becoming the tallest tree in the world.

It is a evergreen tree that can reach an average height of 100 meters and has a pyramidal shape. The leaves remain throughout the year and are stiff and sharp. They are dark green on the upper side and white on the lower side, very hard and lanced.

The tree is also noted for its thick and dark trunk that can reach up to 5 meters in diameter and it has an irregular bark that peels off to reveal a more reddish wood. Studies have calculated that the tree has about 526.69 cubic meters of wood.

This specimen coexists with other giants as it inhabits the Redwood National Park, a green space in which many trees of the family of the redwoods. Many of them reach great heights but Hyperion is the tallest of all.

Like the rest of the Sequoias, this tree prefers deep and cool soils but also humid. Although it has great power to adapt to different temperatures, it does not tolerate frost well.

In addition to giving very tall trees, the Sequoia family stands out for their longevity, also developing very quickly. An average tree can grow 1,80 meters per year between four and ten years of age.
