Origin and characteristics

Damiela, also known as Arabian jasmine or Sambac jasmine, is an evergreen climbing plant native to the eastern Himalayas. Today he has managed to naturalize in many places, such as Mauritius, Madagascar, the Maldives, Cambodia, Indonesia, Christmas Island, Central America. This tells us that it is a very adaptable plant, which lives well in temperate climates as well as in warm tropical ones.

It reaches a height of between 0,5 and 3 meters in height. It develops very thin stems from which ovate leaves sprout, 4 to 12,5cm long by 2-7,5cm wide. The flowers appear throughout the year in groups of 3-12 at the ends of the branches. These are white in color, highly perfumed, and open in the evening (from six in the afternoon more or less). The fruit is a purple to black berry measuring 1cm in diameter.

What are their cares?

  • Location: outside, in semi-shade.
  • Earth:
    • Pot: universal growing substrate mixed with 10% perlite.
    • Garden: it is indifferent as long as it has good drainage.
  • Irrigation: 3-4 times a week in summer, somewhat less the rest of the year.
  • Subscriber: from the beginning of spring to the end of summer, it is advisable to fertilize once a month with organic fertilizers, such as herbivorous animal manure, compost, mulch, guano, etc.
  • Planting or transplanting time: in spring.
  • Multiplication: by cuttings of semi-hard wood with leaves in late summer.
  • Rusticity: withstands cold and frosts down to -4ºC.
