Orchid phototropism

Have you ever wondered why plants seem to grow sideways? It is a very common phenomenon that can be seen especially in indoor plants, but it can also happen with our seedlings or with plants that are not receiving the sunlight they need.

This is something that is known as phototropismspecifically the positive. But … what is phototropism?

Positive phototropism

Plants need light to be able to perform their vital functions and to grow. For this one of their survival tactics is to develop their stems or leaves in such a way that they can capture as much light as possibleeven if that means growing in a way that we would consider strange. They do all this by elongating (or stretching) the cells of the stem of the part that is more shaded thanks to the auxins. These phytohormones are formed in cells, at the tips of the branches, and are transported from one cell to another, and thus can reach impressive heights in a very curious way, being able to obtain amazing curvatures in their trunks.

It can also happen to plants that have a lot of light, but receive an even brighter source. Perhaps it has ever happened to you that you had a plant in a very bright room, but then when you put it near the window its leaves began to grow in the direction of this light. For this reason, it is recommended that, as soon as you acquire a plant, it is placed in its final place.

Phototropism

To avoid that the stems and / or leaves of our plants have to grow too much, it is necessary to know where to place them. For example, if we have a cactus or a palm tree, its direct exposure to the sun since otherwise we could end up achieving that the development of these plants is not adequate.
