Can you prune the palms? Yes, of course, but we must take into account some issues that could seriously endanger the life of the plant.

That is why pruning should focus on some aspects, more than others. Here are some tips to know when to prune, and how to do it to avoid unnecessary risks. In many regions of the world, especially in South America and Europe, palm trees have to face numerous pests: the red weevil, the Paysandisia archon, the black weevil, … If your area is affected by any plague, you should prune to your palm trees as soon as the temperatures drop below 10 degrees, since when the temperature is higher, these insects can reproduce without problems. The rest of the year should refrain from pruning.

But is pruning really important? Yes it is. But you have to do it right. In habitat, due to the force of the wind or the aging of the stem that supports the leaf, it can fall on its own. In gardens this can be a problem, and it is avoided by cutting it. If a three or four meter blade falls on its own… it can cause damage.

It is highly advisable to use suitable tools, previously disinfected, and avoid, as far as possible, using shoes and / or devices that may cause damage to the trunk. Any holeno matter how tiny, it can be a perfect entry for fungi or insects. Equally recommended is the cut the appropriate number of sheets. It is believed that the more leaves that are cut, the faster the palm tree will grow. Well, this is not so. What is achieved is precisely the opposite, since the plant must spend twice as much energy: to remove more leaves, and to grow.

Finally, if some leaves obstruct the passage, can cause damage to someone or are dry, they will be pruned in autumn and / or winter (the colder it is in your area, the sooner you will have to prune).
