The rhododendron is an evergreen shrub native to Southeast Asia that produces magnificent flowers. There are different species, but all of them are a real wonder. Its flowers, in colors as diverse as red, pink or white, combined with those dark green leaves make any corner benefit from its presence.

When was it pruned?
The rhododendron, as we mentioned, is an evergreen plant. It grows during a good part of the year, but in autumn-winter (depending on the temperature of the area) it will remain at rest. In fact, when the thermometers begin to show less than 10ºC, their growth slows down so much that, in the event of frost, it will stop. Why am I telling you all this?
Because it is important to know when it wakes up again to prune it. And that happens in spring, just when it blooms. But beware: it should not be pruned while it blooms, but later.
How is it done?
Rhododendron is a plant that is not usually pruned, unless it is really necessary. If that’s your case then We recommend doing it as follows:
- Remove dry, diseased or weak branches.
- Remove faded flowers.
- Observe it from afar and see which branches have grown too long and then trim back as necessary.
You should try to give it a rounded or oval shapesince that is its natural form. Now, you can also give it the shape of a tree, leaving the trunk bare (without leaves) until the birth of the main branches.
Remember to use proper pruning tools: pruning shears for thinner branches and a small hand saw to cut stems 2cm or more thick. Disinfect them before and after using with pharmacy rubbing alcohol to prevent infection.
