How is the cultivation of blueberries?

Vaccinium corymbosum

The blueberry is a shrub that, due to its characteristics, is an ideal plant to have in any corner, regardless of whether you want to plant it in the ground as if you want to have it in a pot. What’s more, it is not only decorative but also edible.

But How is the cultivation of blueberries? It’s hard? The truth is that no, and even less so with the advice that we are going to offer you below.

Vaccinium corymbosum leaves

If we want to have one or more blueberries, it is very important that we place them outside, in full sun. Although they can grow well in semi-shade, they will have a better color and will produce more fruit in direct sunlight. It is also very necessary that are planted in acid soils or substrates (pH 4 to 5) as otherwise you could have chlorosis (lack of iron or manganese).

Irrigation has to be frequentespecially during the warmer months of the year. The frequency will vary depending on the climate, location, as well as the humidity of the soil / substrate, but generally it has to be watered two to three times a week in summer, and 1-2 / week the rest of the year. In case of doubt, the humidity of the soil or substrate must be checked, for example by introducing a thin wooden stick: if it comes out practically clean, it can be watered as it will be dry. Use lime-free water.

From early spring to late summer you have to pay them with Organic fertilizers, liquid if they are potted, or powder if they are soil, such as guano. The instructions specified on the package must be followed to avoid the risk of overdose.

As they resist frosts down to -15ºC, it is not necessary to protect them from the cold. But, yes, if we want to favor pollination, it will be necessary to obtain at least two specimens.
